7 more held over Ctg port unrest

Chittagong, Oct 15 (bdnews24.com) – Police have arrested seven more in connection with the workers’ unrest at Chittagong Port raising the number to 47.

The police made the arrest durig a special operation between Thursday night and Friday morning.

The arrested labour leaders are Biplob Majumdar, Maharram Ali, Akther Hossain and four others.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Kusum Dewan told bdnews24.com that they had made the arrests for bringing out processions in the dock area defying a ban on gatherings.

After deploying military at the port on Wednesday, a ban was imposed at the port and adjacent areas on processions and rallies.

The police foiled a procession of agitating workers brought out shortly after the ban was imposed. A section of the workers brought out another procession defying the ban, which led to chase and counter chase between them and the policmen.

The police arrested 29 workers on the same day while 11 more were held on Thursday.

Three cases were filed against unidentified workers under the Speedy Trial Act for bringing out processions defying the ban, attacking the police and entering the fourth jetty forcibly.

Of the cases filed, one was by the police and another by the port. Each case accused 400 unnamed workers.
