Man accused of torching cop’s car

13 October 2010
A MAN accused of setting fire to a policeman’s car appeared in court yesterday.
Peter Easton, 45, of Broughton Road, South Shields, was charged with arson and harassment when he appeared before South Tyneside magistrates.

He is accused of harassing the police officer and setting fire to his £15,000 car on the driveway of his home on September 5. Easton did not enter a plea to either charge.

At the time of the alleged offence, the officer and his partner were away on holiday.

The case can only be dealt with at crown court, and the magistrates adjourned the hearing until December 7, when it will be committed to Newcastle Crown Court.

Magistrates were told Easton was in the process of moving house and he was bailed on condition that he reports to South Shields police station every day until his home address is established, that he is excluded from certain areas of South Shields, and that he does not contact prosecution witnesses.
