Asylum seekers to face court

MORE detainees have been charged with damaging Commonwealth property during an alleged three-day riot at the Darwin immigration detention centre.

Sutikno Aris Santoso and Wawan Wawan are listed to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on Friday on the charge for their alleged roles in the riot.

Authorities say a number of detainees caused more than $400,000 damage during the riot that began in the early hours of August 29.

Detainees allegedly started a fire in a wheelie bin filled with centre property and damaged computers, televisions, tables and bedding.

Some also allegedly broke through a fence into a neighbouring compound.

It was alleged that the men climbed a tree in the early hours of the morning.

NT Police and Australian Federal Police were called at about 7am by Serco – the private company that is contracted to run security at Australia’s immigration detention centres.

The Indonesian men were being held at the centre as alleged people smugglers.

Joni Balu and Hariyanto Bin Seneman appeared in court about three weeks ago on the same charges.

They were bailed to return to the immigration detention centre until the matter was referred to court.

They were then moved to a Melbourne detention centre.
