Kushtia, Sep 29 (bdnews24.com)—The Kushtia police have killed an alleged extremist in a so-called gunfight.
The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday at the Shwastipur village under Sadar Upazila.
The dead person was identified as Shahidul Islam, 35, son of Chand Ali from Bholadia village.
CA Halim, assistant superintendent of police (Sadar circle), told bdnews24.com that the district and detective branch of police had jointly raided the Shwastipur village at about 1am, on information that a group of ‘extremists’ were arranging a secret meeting in a bamboo grove.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers the ‘extremists’ apparently opened fire on the police.
The police also exchanged fire in ‘self-defence.’
Shahidul’s dead body was recovered from the spot, after the ‘extremists’ had escaped, at the end of a 25-minute gunfight.
A light gun, 12 rounds of ammunition, and five cocktails were also recovered from the spot, the police added.
The extremist’s body was sent to the Kushtia General Hospital morgue.
Halim claimed that Shahidul had at least six cases, including two murder cases, filed against him with the Kushtia Sadar police.
The police claimed that Shahidul was a member of the extremist organisation Gana Mukti Fauz.
Earlier on Sep 16, two people, also claimed by the police to be ‘extremists’, were killed in a similar kind of encounter with police and the elite force Rapid Action Battalion in Kushtia.
