MANILA, Philippines – The military during the weekend posted significant accomplishments in its pursuit to end the problem on insurgency in the country with the capture of a New People’s Army (NPA) rebel and the death of one of its members in the Eastern Visayas and the voluntary surrender of nine local communist rebels in Bicol region.
Lt. Col. Noel Vestuir of the 8th Infantry Division (8ID) in Eastern Visayas said at 1 p.m. on Saturday, troops from the 8ID’s 803rd Brigade engaged with NPA rebels at the boundaries of Las Navas and Matuginao towns in Samar.
Vestuir said the clash resulted in the death of one NPA member and the capture of the rebels’ camp in the area. Vestuir added an M16 armalite rifle was also recovered by the operating troops. Meanwhile, Lt. Cpl. John Oberio, commander of the 2nd Infantry Battalion which has jurisdiction in Bicol region reported that nine members of the Barangay Revolutionary Committee of the CPP-NPA-NDF surrendered.
Oberio said the rebels claimed they have finally realized their fight against the government was an exercise in futility. He identified those who surrendered as Margie Bayle alias “Cheryl, ” Marilon Orido alias “Lay, ” Joe Morada alias “Boy, ” Santos Alcadeza alias “Karantog, ” Edralyn Sodsod alias “Chie”, Nicanor Lambo alias “Bugoy, ” Rolando Almojuela alias “Joy, ” Homer Espana alias “Lito, ” and Jose Lupera alias “Juan, ”
