Over 20 injured in vine-growers protest in Kosovo after police use tear gas, pepper spray

Police say they used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse dozens of vine-growers protesting local winemaker’s refusal to stock their grapes in western Kosovo.

Over 20 people, including a policeman, were reportedly injured after protesters broke through the gates of a winemaker and started hurling stones.

Vine-growers store their grapes at local winemakers, but a sharp drop in sales prompted privately owned wineries to turn back harvested grapes.

The Friday incident highlights Kosovo’s economic woes, with its 45 per cent unemployment rate.
