RIO DE JANEIRO – One police officer was killed and two others wounded in a spate of attacks on law enforcement in Brazil’s second-largest city, authorities said Friday.
Sgt. Leopoldo das Neves Nascimento, 43, died when unknown assailants open fired on a police patrol car in the west Rio neighborhood of Jacarepagua.
Wounded in that incident were another officer as well as two employees and a customer at a nearby bakery.
The surviving policeman said the assault was carried out by at least five men with rifles traveling in an SUV.
The shooting in Jacarepagua came a few hours after shots were fired at two other police cars in different areas of Bonsucesso, a neighborhood on the north side of Rio de Janeiro.
One officer suffered minor wounds.
Police are puzzled by the shootings in Bonsucesso, Rio state Public Safety Secretary Mariano Beltrame said, as such incidents are unusual for that neighborhood and neither of the officers targeted had received threats.
Frequent clashes among drug gangs, vigilantes and police have made Rio de Janeiro one of Brazil’s most dangerous cities. EFE
