TWENTY-THREE pupils at St Margaret Girls High School in Chipata have been suspended following a riot at the school last week.
According to Radio Breeze FM main news monitored in Chipata on Wednesday afternoon, the pupils were suspended for destroying school property in protest against power interruptions that hit the learning institution for about four days.
Headteacher Beatrice Phiri confirmed the suspension of the 23 pupils, saying six of them had been suspended for being the ring leaders while 17 others were banned for actively participating in the riot.
Sister Phiri said the school authorities were now waiting for the office of the district education board secretary to respond to the decision to send away the pupils.
She said all the pupils at the school would be made to pay for the infrastructure that was damaged during the riot.
Pupils at the Catholic-run school on Monday last week protested against persistent power outages for close to a week.
