Sabotage suspected in power cut – two people hurt

Enemalta said today that a power cut yesterday in parts of Corradino, Has Saptan, Marsaxlokk and Birzebbuga was cased when a feeder tripped after cables were tampered with.

Power was lost at 7.20 p.m.

“When Enemalta technicians went on site to investigate they found that certain cables had been tampered with. A report was immediately lodged to the police. After preliminary investigations it was discovered that two people had suffered electrical injuries and were receiving care at Mater Dei Hospital,” Enemalta said.

The injured men are suspected of having been the vandals. The police said they were hospitalised for burns but they are not in a criticical condition. They are aged 23 and 25.

A total of 17 substations were affected, but Enemalta technicians and engineers managed to restore power to all the localities affected by 9.53.

A police investigation is underway. Magistrate Clare Stafrace Zammit is holding an inquiry.

An unrelated cable fault between Valletta Road and tas-Sejba in Mqabba occurred at 10.43 p.m. and affected parts of Qrendi, Ħal Far, Żurrieq and Mqabba, power was restored at 2.22 a.m.
