Garment workers blockade road for arrears wages

Several hundreds workers of a garment factory blockaded Mirpur-Farmgate road for an hour Thursday demanding arrear wages and other financial benefits, police said.

Witnesses said nearly 800 workers of Arizuana garments in Mirpur-12 took to the streets in front of the factory at about 10:00am and demanded their arrear salaries.

Chase and counter chase took place when police forced them to clear the road that disrupted traffic movement causing sufferings to the road users.

Pallabi police chief Iqbal Hossain said movement of the agitators were confined by police as they were trying to vandalise the unit. Later the withdrew the blockade after getting assurance from the local lawmaker and owners that their demands would be met.

Meanwhile, students of Titumir College blocked the road in front of the college for an hour from 11:00am demanding that the college authorities provide them with a bus for transportation.

Vehicular movement came to a halt from Mahakhali to Gulshan-1 due to the blockade, witness said.

The demonstrators lifted their blockade an hour later, after the college authorities assured that their demands would be addressed.
