PSBJC supporters, police clash

KOLKATA: Fresh violence broke out near Jhargram in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district on Thursday when a large number of supporters of the Maoist-backed Police Santrash Birodhi Janasadharaner Committee (PSBJC) clashed with the police when the former tried to lay siege to the Manikpara thana in the region.
The police initially resorted to baton charging and firing tear-gas shells to disperse the mob but later fired gunshots in the air when the situation turned violent.
CPI(M) office torched
Miscreants set ablaze an office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Bachhurdoba near Jhargram late on Wednesday.
District Police Superintendent Manoj Kumar Verma told The Hindu over telephone that the police had prior information about the gherao programme of the PSBJC supporters. They were demanding unconditional release of one of their supporters who was arrested for being a suspected Maoist.
