Spain’s Interior Minister, today warned the terrorist group ETA that they will be searched out.

We know what is ETA, but ETA also know what we are,” said the minister at a press conference at the headquarters of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), which assessed the arrests of four alleged ETA members in Portugal and France during last night, thanks to the collaboration of the police in both countries.

Rubalcaba said the two arrested in Portugal was a case of “hot pursuit”, as he pointed to that they had entered Portugal fleeing from Spanish authorities.

In this regard the Guardia Civil confirmed that they had entered several miles into Luso, although the Republican Guard in the neighbouring country took over, the two worked “in perfect coordination.”

The minister said that the truck that was intercepted was full of “explosives, weapons, documents and license plates”. Asked about the possibility that this van with explosives was related to the announcement a few days ago about the possibility of an attack over Christmas, the Interior minister said “it is too early” to reach this conclusion because investigations are in their initial phase.

In any case, Rubalcaba said security forces want Portugal to hand over the two ETA suspects as soon as possible, so he has asked his Portuguese counterpart Rui Pereira to secure the extradition to Spain of the two suspected ETA members.

In relation to the operation in France, in which two suspected ETA members were arrested, the minister explained that those arrested belong to the logistics apparatus that supplies weapons to the military wing of the outlawed group.

The two suspected ETA members arrested tonight in Portugal have been identified as Garikoitz Iratxe Yáñez García Arrieta Ortiz de Barron, the latter is included in the list of suspected perpetrators of the attack perpetrated in Burgos and Mallorca in July.

As reported by the Interior Ministry in a communiqué, the two suspected ETA members were arrested while fleeing the Civil Guard after being intercepted driving the van packed with explosives in Morales del Vino (Zamora).

After activating the established protocols, specifically those relating to cross-border police cooperation, constant communication was established with the National Republican Guard (GNR) which, at 22:40 hours, found the vehicle in the town of Torre de Moncorvo, about 40 kilometres inside the Portuguese border, and arrested the driver.

The GNR Lusa reported that, “four or five vehicles pursued the van and some shots were fired to force the vehicle to stop”.

Yanez, meanwhile, was located by the GNR in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz while travelling with false documents in a French-registered Vauxhall Astra.

The alleged terrorist has previous convictions for having gathered information on possible targets for ETA, such as politicians, military or police, and was included in the latest list of photographs distributed by the Department of Interior with the five other alleged participants in the bombings of last July against the barracks of Burgos and in the Mallorcan town of Calvia.
