Charges In Prison Riot Expected To Strain Courts

December 28
BURGIN, Ky. — Court officials in Boyle County are bracing for an overload as charges are expected to be filed against more than 100 inmates stemming from the August riot at Northpoint Training Center in Burgin.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Richie Bottoms told the Advocate-Messenger of Danville that there will be at least 100 and possibly as many as 150 people charged with riot-related felonies – mostly arson. There were no fatalities in the riot, but parts of the prison were damaged beyond repair.

That volume of cases figures to strain the court system, which Circuit Judge Darren Peckler said can absorb about 20 to 30 cases a month. More than that will require special considerations, he said.
