Haitian riot police detain student protesters

Associated Press Sep 10

The students had been clashing with police in the morning Wednesday. They were warned the raid was coming by afternoon and lay on the ground in a circle awaiting arrest. Police carried them into a truck to be taken to a police station.

Students from several schools have clashed with police and U.N. peacekeepers all year to press demands for a hike in Haiti’s minimum wage, changes in curriculum and the departure of the U.N. troops.

A judge accompanied officers during the raid. A special warrant had to be issued because Haitian law normally prevents police from entering university campuses
